You'd never want someone going through your Google search history, but now you can get a glimpse at what the rest of the country has been looking up.
From major sports events, the most obscure memes and ‘how to’ questions we were too embarrassed to ask our mates.
Google NZ has revealed all the top searches Kiwis were curious about this year, and it’s okay to admit you searched most of these too.
NZ’s top ‘how to’ searches for 2024
1. Watch the Olympics in NZ - ‘Cause if we didn’t how would we have caught all the action from our Kiwi athletes and of course, Raygun…
2. Lock Facebook profile - Privacy was a hot topic for 2024, and Kiwis were out here making sure there weren’t any unwanted snoopers checking their FB statuses from 2011.
3. Make a human in Infinite Craft - This game had us trying to figure out how to create the perfect pixel person.
4. Watch All Blacks vs England - It was a game not to be missed. This rivalry is intense, with close scores in all three 2024 matches between the teams. We’re proud to claim two wins outta the lot.
5. Mew - I’m not gonna lie, I’m still trying to perfect this. It’s the move of lifting your tongue to the roof of your mouth to give a slimmer appearance, and as the cool kids say, ‘snatch your jawline’.
NZ’s top trending searches for 2024
1. US Election - Turns out, even halfway across the world, we couldn’t get enough of the election updates.
2. UEFA European Football Championship - Footy fever hit us hard this year, and loads of us were Googling match times, scores and teams.
3. Connections (New York Times game) - Wordle who? Connection is the new addictive game where you match words into groups - it’s harder than it seems!
4. Olympics - All eyes were on the Olympics in Paris this year, whether it was record-breaking performances, the hilarious memes - more on that later - or even just the chocolate muffins that took the internet by storm - the Olympics were huge this year.
5. Liam Payne - The tragic loss of the former One Direction singer in October had plenty of fans searching for updates, taking a walk down memory lane and mourning his death.
NZ’s top trending meme searches for 2024
1. Raygun - She might’ve been the most controversial break-dancer of the Olympic Games, but boy did she give us a good laugh. Remember when she got to show off some more of her moves, joining Tones and I onstage in Melbourne?
2. Demure - It’s the very cutesy, very mindful phrase that took over the internet in September. Demure basically became the new ‘slay’ overnight and we love that for the creator Jools, who spent over 11 years trying to go viral - she did it and we ate it up!
3. Trump - ‘nough said.
4. What’s up brother - Much like ‘demure’, what’s up brother was the first viral phrase of 2024 made popular by hilarious Twitch streamer Sketch. From sports teams to our mates, we raised our fingers to say the classic words “What’s up Brother”.
5. Why so serious - The classic Joker quote made a comeback - this time, with a beat boxing twist. Careful you might fall into a Google hole of 100s of videos recreating the meme.
What a ride 2024 was for our search bars! Here's hoping we stay curious in 2025!
