Someone spotted a new iPhone selling for $1 in an Auckland vending machine

Hang on a minute...

UPDATE: We looked into this and found out this whole thing was organised by One NZ, so we hit them up, and now we're going to help them give away a bunch more phones! Check out all the details here.

In the midst of the cossie livs crisis, we're used to seeing Reddit posts complaining about the price of petrol or freaking out about how much veggies cost - but not today.

One Reddit user shared a photo of what appears to be a full-blown, brand new iPhone just chilling between the snacks in a random vending machine at Westfield Newmarket.

"Is this an Auckland thing?" they asked alongside the picture, where the iconic Apple box is peeking out behind a packet of chips.

"LOL how did that get in there?" one commenter asked.

"Is that what I think it is?" asked another.

Some commenters doubted the legitimacy of the find, with one writing: "Doubt it's actually a phone, maybe an 'influencer hiding $50 in a vending machine' for content."

Another reckoned: "It's the backing plate behind the last bag of chips to prevent it falling out the back of the mechanism."

Whether this is a strange accident or a cheeky promotional stunt - if there is actually a new iPhone to be had for a dollar - that's a lot of bang for your buck.

Who's behind it all?

Are there more phones to be found?

Is the phone still there, and if not, who got their hands on it?

Is it really a phone at all??!!

At this point, we've got more questions than answers…but we'll do some snooping and keep you updated.
