Call For Overhaul In NZ Firearms Safety Training Amid Rising Hunting Incidents

"There's not enough firearms ranges and...no mandatory training for license holders," Thurlow states.

The New Zealand Deerstalkers Association (NZDA) is advocating for a critical review of the current firearms safety training system.

Gwyn Thurlow, NZDA's Chief Executive, highlights the worrying disconnect between theoretical learning and practical application, citing a decline in new firearms licenses since pre-COVID times.

Thurlow argues that relying solely on the Mountain Safety Council for training is insufficient, leading to potential safety risks.

He also discusses political shifts in New Zealand favouring outdoor enthusiasts, with new ministers appointed to advocate for recreational activities, hinting at promising changes for the hunting community.
