Coldplay kicked off the first of their three NZ shows at Eden Park last night, and everyone was blown away - including frontman Chris Martin.
Around 50,000 Kiwis headed to the gig to see Martin and band mates Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion perform in Aotearoa for the first time since 2016.
During the show, the band brought out local group This is Our Home - Pacific Artists advocating for Climate Justice.
The vibes were unreal as the group - Junior Soqeta, Sione Pole, Lahi Vaoese, and Saia Williams-Folau - launched into the track ‘We Pray’ originally performed by Coldplay, Little Simz and Burna Boy.
In the second verse the group added in some te reo into the mix, causing Chris Martin to stop the performance.
“Stop, stop! STOP!! Let’s do that verse again, that was f***ing amazing ... excuse my language, that was incredible,” he said.
“Let’s do that again, it was too good” he beamed from ear to ear as they launched back into it.
Kiwi fans have taken to the comments of a video that captured the moment on TikTok.
“It’s cool that he works with the local artists,” one commenter wrote.
Another added: “GOOSEBUMPS EVERY TIME.”
“Omg this was my favourite part 😭💗,” a third concert goer agreed.
It’s not the first time This is Our Home have performed with Coldplay – back in June this year, they played during Coldplay’s in Lyon, France.
During the Europe leg of their ‘Music Of The Spheres World Tour’, The group were filmed performing at a studio in London.
The studio owner, Brian Eno, captured the moment the group sang the waiata ‘E Papa’ and sent it to Chris Martin.
Climate change activist Suluafi Brianna Fruean was also there and told PMN: “Chris Martin watched it and said, ‘we have a show in France tomorrow, how can I get them there?’”
From there, the connection was made and it was epic to see them play again right here in Aotearoa.
