New government funding of $3 million is set to enable AgResearch scientists to explore new ways to tackle industry challenges such as plant disease and reducing environmental impacts.
AgResearch Chief Scientist Dr Axel Heiser talks about the three Smart Idea Grants, from the government's 2024 Endeavour Fund, that are set to transform agriculture and sustainability.
He highlights the use of RNA interference (RNAi) technology to combat fungal diseases in plants and animals, particularly facial eczema in livestock.
Additionally, Dr Heiser explains the development of nano fertilisers which aims to reduce nitrogen loss and boost plant efficiency, offering significant environmental and economic benefits.
He also explores the creation of new biomaterials from proteins, which could potentially replace plastics and revolutionise production systems.
