Battling The Elements: Southland Farmers' Resilience Amid Relentless Rain

“At the end of the day, it’s all about perspective,” Herrick says.

Jason Herrick, Southland Federated Farmers President, sheds light on the gruelling conditions faced by Southland farmers due to unprecedented rainfall.

With rainfall at 220% of the monthly average and soil saturation at 100%, he tells Dom farmers are struggling with feed shortages, high lamb mortality rates and pasture damage.

Herrick emphasises the importance of staying positive and controlling what they can, underscoring the necessity of communication and community engagement for well-being during such challenging times.

Additionally, he shares his personal journey of losing 70 kilos, which has greatly improved his mental health.

On a governance front, Herrick discusses the ongoing battles with the Gore District Council over farming regulations, working tirelessly to mitigate the impact of red tape on farmers.
