Celebrating A Lifetime Of Community Service: Barbara Mckay's Journey In Golden Bay

"I've always tried to be as close to the rural women's creed... be helpful and kind," she says.

Recognised with the Golden Bay Community Award through the Tasman District Council late last year, Barbara McKay reflects on over 60 years of dedication.

Although she tells Dom it is hard to pick one thing in particular she was given the award for; McKay says she has helped out anywhere and everywhere over the past six decades from leading guide groups and organising sewing nights to managing a farm and adopting four children.

She also touches on her family’s rugby legacy, including her grandsons’ involvement in local teams, humorously recounting how rugby star Todd Blackadder became part of the family, marrying her daughter after initially coming to work on the farm.
