Wool vs. Synthetic: A Tipping Point For New Zealand's Wool Industry

"Why continue to perpetuate [synthetic use] when you've got this amazing fiber?" Smith argues.

The deliberate exclusion of wool carpet from state homes in favour of synthetic materials by Kāinga Ora has caused a lot of consternation, particularly in agriculture circles.

Bremworth CEO Greg Smith Smith highlights the potential negative impact on the wool sector, noting that this could set a "damaging precedent" by undervaluing local natural fibres in favour of cheaper, imported plastics.

He explains how the controversy could serve as a catalyst for bipartisan agreement, pushing for legislation to mandate wool in government buildings.

Smith also underscores the importance of fair tender processes and the broader social and economic implications for New Zealand's wool industry.
