Gene Editing In New Zealand: Navigating The Future Of Apple + Pear Development

"Technology should be part of our vision for the future," he states.

Tony Martin, CEO of Prevar, highlights New Zealand's need for new gene editing (GE) legislation to help apple and pear growers compete globally.

Currently travelling for the National Grower Roadshow, he explains how it underscores these benefits while addressing concerns, especially from the organic industry.

He clarifies that GE focuses on enhancing traits within the same species, unlike GMOs, and maintains New Zealand's reputation for quality produce.

With a strong governmental push, Martins believes the move toward GE could lead to more sustainable and competitive horticulture.
