World Cup-winning coach Sir Steve Hansen joined Martin Devlin on the latest episode of DSPN, sharing his perspectives on the international rugby scene, the challenges and rewards of his current role, and thoughts on potential future endeavors.
Now residing in Japan, Martin asked Hansen about his thoughts on the recent international matchups.
"I thought Australia made some great strides... South Africa again were strong, weren't they?" Hansen stated along with expressing concern for Wales, "Probably the side that was most disappointing was Wales."
Speaking more on Sprinkboks, Hansen described them as "very beatable" despite their formidable reputation. "The more they win, the more the myth grows. And it makes it harder, I guess, the more their confidence grows too."
As for the All Blacks, Hansen says, “Naturally we're a team that wants to use the ball." and while there have been some comments on the side's performance this season, Hansen is optimistic yet critical: "This is a team that should have won the World Cup... it was some poor decisions by things that were out of their control."
When it comes to Hansen’s latest role in Japanese rugby, the former All Blacks coach says "It's probably one of the best competitions in the world." He notes the high standards and impressive players, affirming, "Beauden Barrett came back and played well. So, you know... the game... has really gone to another level."
Regarding his own coaching future, Hansen is hesitant about a return to international coaching. He shares, "I wouldn't say I wouldn’t coach internationally again, but it would take something pretty special."
